The Amsler grid test is a quick and easy way to assess the central vision of the retina (vision of the macula).

The macula is characterized by having the highest concentration of cones in the retina. These photoreceptors are responsible for visual definition or resolution.

The behavior of the macula is analogous to that of a projection screen. In our eye, the cornea and lens would act as a projector and the macula would be the canvas on which the image is projected.

Thus, any type of alteration that gives rise to a deformation, degeneration and / or atrophy of the macula, will result in an altered, distorted or deformed image.

The Amsler grid test allows us to easily see where, how and how much the image is altered.
